Let's start a little Dead Sight discussion shall we?

So, when I remember DS I remember Alucard and Ranka going H.A.M. on everything they crossed, that placed them into a category I like to call S class unnaturals. Old school DS saw the likes of Alice getting the fuck away from herds of zombies while tyrants swarmed her locations, despite this Alice is still classified as a Tier 1 BOW. Meanwhile, you have groups of people fighting for their lives only for 313 to show up and wreck house on so many levels causing people to run for their lives until Alucard shows up and starts a fight with the big ol meanie. 

That was the past. 

And in the present I'm seeing a lot of the same.

You have a Tier 1 BOW in Amy running from Tyrants and getting thrashed by other BOWs, then you have the refurbished Adam opting to escape rather than fight alongside the Patriot (who is a complete badass I believe). Then you have Spencer who absolutely mullards a handful of BOWs with no weapon, meanwhile, Tori's crew is running from zombies but holding strong.




The discussion, what do you believe is the key to surviving in the Dead Sight universe?




Almost 9 years ago when someone got too powerful or proved to be too much Val would just re-calibrate a tyrant, which lead to the creation of 313, 314, and Natas. Those 3 tyrants became a problem even for Alucard and Ranka who were notably the two strongest things on the forum. This also caused a problem for people who weren't near their level, 313 became unstoppable as Alice and her crew unloaded bullet after bullet at the Tyrant only to have half her resistance group mowed down. Which created a true aspect of Survivor Horror. However, you have T-Nemesis, which was arguably an absurdly powerful Nemesis but was far weaker than 313 allowing multiple chase sequences until it was finally killed by Alice, Rain, and Amy. The balance of unstoppable and dangerous in those days was phenomenal and everyone feared the likes of 313 and T-Nemesis.

The key to surviving on dead sight is to not be stupid. The forum is designed that it will compensate for your really strong character by throwing odds at you that you wouldn't survive alone. It forces people to be challenged and will steadily keep people entertained as they watch others cleverly evade death or run headlong into the fist of a tyrant losing their head.

When I envisioned this forum 9 years ago I just through resident evil would be a side project, then we just started playing with it as if it was a sandbox and the results came out to be very good in the end. Most people avoided high risk areas because we had a brutal way of punishing people for being too 'flashy' and making stupid choices, and most people who knew they could over power things soon learned that they couldn't tank and spank everything that crossed their paths forcing them to come up with ways to beat enemies.

Case in point, 313 was introduced after Dead Sight 1 and Dead Sight 2 were brutally defeated by Ranka and Alucard. 313's gimmick was a magnetic field that repelled objects around him that traveled at a certain velocity. If a bullet was fired at him it would hit the field and be forced in another direction, but if he was standing next to a street light it wouldn't bend or break. In the end what caused its downfall was that slow objects didn't react to the field allowing people to attack it with close ranged weapons. What ended up killing the 313 was an extremely high powered high velocity weapon that had a lot more impact than the shield could take, it took over three months to finally kill 313 and 313 was considered one of our greatest and most well designed weapons on the forum.

313 was designed to fight the likes of Alucard, Ranka, and any other near their level of badassery. What happened when others took it on was a lot of the same of what happened when Alucard took it on, their bullets missed they were constantly forced back, and everyone felt the danger that their character could be killed at any moment by this hulking mass of evil. How everyone survived was that they used common sense.

I agree but also back in old dead sight you usually had one enemy, Umbrella, or the people who fought against Umbrella. Surviving meant fighting of hordes of zombies and B.O.W.s and evading tyrants, or plowing through them if you were strong enough. Now in this story line it's a whole new ball game. You still have to be smart about what you do and how you go about it but now everyone can potentially be a threat. From Smugglers, to wackos who live out in the wastes and hunt and kill anything for fun. To the B.O.W hunters and the government, to the Illegal resistance groups and even the B.O.W.s out in the wastes who are fighting to survive and mostly want to be alone. 

In this new story there really isn't a really defined enemy and it means you have to be smarter and more careful with your actions. As an illegal you're constantly at risk of running into that one thing that's going to kill you. As someone living in the safe zones you're at risk of Raids and attacks from Resistance groups, or Umbrella and you can't let your guard down. And I think that's what I'm trying to say, The key to surviving this new Dead Sight is not letting your guard drop for one moment.

The original Dead Sight was very linear, it was designed to be very simple: Here's a tyrant try and kill it or it will kill you. It never was too over powering and it never was too easy. The concept behind one enemy and everyone else is good guys no matter their orientation was good but it lead into multiple story lines that we have now.

Hellsing eventually left to protect London from the outbreak and Alucard was sealed away, the Government eventually began to fear the BOWs that protected and saved them and condemned them like Jews. The Resistance groups are broken up into militants, peace keepers, and defenders similar to civil rights activists. Every single group has a way of dealing with the end of the world, and that's what it takes to survive, finding your group even if your enemies may be fellow humans.

Survival on a sandbox version of a survival horror should be summed up by how well one can explain their surroundings and the reactions their characters have to those surroundings. I know famously we like to leave out details sometimes just to bring them up a moment later for that surprise factor but sometimes over compensating details could be the key to explaining a fancy get away.

Mary walked through an alley way with three doors and two directions between her, there was a ladder to her left and scaffolding leading up to the roof.

That one sentence could save Mary's life in the event that some asshole admin decides to NPC a horde of zombies down one end of the alleyway and a BOW on the other end. Attention to detail, even if the thing you're faced with is unstoppable.
